The Streetles at M&J Place Hostel Rome

Markus Rieger and Oli Spielberger are currently on a 7week musical tour around Europe.
They rely solely on the money the make from their street music to pay for everything from transport to accommodation and food. Both boys come from Aschaffenburg in Germany and are taking a gap year to travel round with their music and hopefully improve on some of their skills.

Markus plays the guitar while Oli plays the upright bass and they both sing. Mainly they specialize in songs from English bands including the Beatles and the kooks but they also perform German songs among a range of others.

This is the first long solo trip that the guys have done together and they have planned it all themselves. They have even got postcards and their own website which is which they set up all for the tour. They are 3weeks in on the trip so far and it has all been a smooth ride in which they have already visited Prague, Berlin, Toulouse, Barcelona, and Rome just to name a few places.

In Rome, they selected M&J Place Hostel Rome, Italy

as a base to discover Rome.

They have a planned itinerary for there tour but only decide on how long they will stay in each place once they are there. So there are no set dates on where they will be at what time. The best way to follow their progress would be to check out their website as they regularly update it with what is happening on their travels. Some major cities they are still to visit are Venice, Paris, Amsterdam and Hamburg with more stops in between, so keep an ear out for them as they are hugely enjoyable to listen to.
We wish the boys best of luck with they rest of their travels round Europe.

Happy 2763rd Birthday, Rome!!!

The city of Rome has some great news to share with you. The eternal city is celebrating its birthday— 2763 years of unique history. Don’t miss the chance to stay in the city as there will be a lot of event going on. Rome’s birthday is celebrated on the 21st of April, 2010, commemorating the date of Rome’s founding in 753BC. Rome will hold several festivals, concerts, and special events this weekend and on April 21. Historical societies put on gladiator displays and performances in and around the forum area. There’s usually a spectacular fireworks display by the Tiber River.

Happy 2763rd Birthday, Rome!!!

There is archaeological evidence of human occupation of the Rome area from at least 14000 years, but the dense layer of much younger debris obscures Palaeolithic and Neolithic sites. However, Rome’s early history is shrouded in legend. According to Roman tradition, the city was founded by Romulus on the 21st of April, 753 BC. This date is also marking the traditional date of Romulus’ sole reign. The legendary origin of the city’s name is the traditional founder and first ruler. It is said that two brothers: Romulus and Remus (who were raised by a she-wolf) decided to build a glorious city. After an argument, Romulus killed his brother Remus and soon after he named it after himself, Rome.

Probably the best known part of Roman history is the period defined as The Roman Republic. It was the phase of the ancient Roman civilisation characterised by a republican form of government. It began with the overthrow of the Roman monarchy, c. 509 BC, and lasted over 450 years until its subversion, through a series of civil wars, into the Principate form of government and the Imperial period. It was the most glorious period of this nation, defined by the economic, technological, architectural and cultural golden age. Rome also saw its territory expand dramatically during this period, from central Italy to the entire Mediterranean world. Even in present times the city of Rome is full of signs of vigorous history.

Come to Rome and enjoy the city to the fullest. On the 21st of April, the doors of numerous museums and archeological sights are open to public, and the streets, richly decorated with flowers, are flooded by sumptuous processions of gladiators, senators, and other heroes of the Roman many-century history. In addition, The Italian Ministry of Culture announced that its annual Culture Week will be held from the 16th to 25th of April, 2010. Celebrate the birthday of Rome with excitement. The secrets of Rome has never been so fascinating and accessible. Everyone will be able to find something that they will enjoy.

Rome Culture Week: 16 – 25 of April, 2010 Settimana della Cultura Rome, Italy

The Italian Ministry of Culture announced that its annual Culture Week will be held from the 16th to 25th of April, 2010. During the event all state-run museums, galleries, monuments and archaeological sites across the country are open to the public free of charge and numerous exhibitions, performances, guided tours and other initiatives have also been organised for the occasion. The event now in its 12th year aims to promote Italy’s cultural patrimony and to open to the public hundreds of cultural sites that are normally closed.

Why its worth participating in this unique event? First of all, because Rome – the eternal city – is a hotspot of the history and culture. If you want to begin your cultural adventure, you cannot miss this city. UNESCO has estimated that 40% of the world’s cultural heritage lies in Italy. Italy’s heritage is indeed so rich that it would take a vast army of people simply to staff all the historic palaces, ancient ruins, minor museums, and other sights of interest, and its costs would be prohibitive, so only the top 30% or so are kept open regularly.

Settimana della Cultura Rome, Italy - All in Rome

Here’s another major reason for the Settimana della Cultura: hundreds of sights normally closed to the public are staffed by volunteers and their doors thrown open free of charge. There are literally thousands of initiatives across Italy, and hundreds just in Rome. Its a great time to explore all the state museum, galleries and spend some time in a city full of sun and spring. Don’t miss the chance to discover Villa Borghese – the gallery that is famous not only for the beautiful surroundings, but also for the great art collections.

Rome is an open air Museum. Everywhere you look, there is a piece of history! Spring is known as the time of changes. Discover the new possibilities and new attractions of the eternal city. The secrets of Rome has never been so fascinating and accessible. You will have no chances to get bored.
